The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) provides an organization for four-year institutions to compete outside of the NCAA that better aligns with their school priorities. These institutions are primarily smaller and enrollment-driven. The NAIA was officially formed in 1952 after over a decade of sponsoring a postseason basketball tournament.
